Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an increasingly popular orthodontic device that’s used to align your teeth, often as an alternative to braces. Invisalign involves a series of customized, tight-fitting retainers that slip over your teeth and encourage them to shift into alignment. Many patients prefer Invisalign to braces because they’re transparent and far less noticeable. More severe cases of crooked teeth, however, may benefit more from braces. Dr. Parikh is a Preferred Invisalign Provider.

Who should get Invisalign?

Invisalign is more beneficial for teens and adults. Children’s teeth and mouths are still developing, making tight-fitting retainers less useful in the long term. Clear orthodontic aligners like Invisalign are also used for patients with only moderately crowded teeth or minor spacing issues. Severe crowding or spacing may require a more sophisticated treatment method.

How does Invisalign work?

After your complimentary consultation, Dr. Parikh will create impressions of your teeth in her office and devise a plan for correcting the alignment of your teeth and bite. You will then receive the first set of trays 2-3 weeks later. Throughout the Invisalign treatment period, Dr. Parikh fits your teeth through a series of retainers designed to straighten them over time.

You can remove these retainers — made of a clear plastic or acrylic material — when you’re:

  • Eating
  • Brushing
  • Flossing

You’ll typically go through each retainer in the series every few weeks until your teeth are aligned. Dr. Parikh recommends check-up appointments about every six weeks.

The treatment period can last 10 weeks to 24 months. If you only need slight adjustments, your treatment duration will be minimal. The more your teeth need to move or rotate, the longer you’ll need Invisalign.

What are advantages of Invisalign?

Compared to other teeth-straightening options, Invisalign provides many benefits. They:

  • Treat simple to complex cases
  • Provide predictable, controlled tooth movements
  • Are virtually invisible
  • Are removable
  • Avoid the risk of injuries from broken or sharp wires and brackets

The main advantages that entice patients to opt for the Invisalign system are comfort and convenience. The trays are smooth and comfortable to wear, and even removable. And unlike braces, you don’t need to worry about gum or mouth irritation.
